     We Serve!

The New Mexico Lions Crane Reading Foundation (NMLCRF), a 501c(3) organization, was formed for the express purpose of improving reading skills in New Mexico.  NMLCRF advocates and supports the New Mexico Lions Crane Reading Program (NMLCRP).

The NM Lions Crane Reading Program (NMCLRP) is a research based integrated program that combines the latest computer technology with other proven activities.  (Complete details and reference for the LCRP are included in the book NMLCRP Handbook by Allen & Virginia Crane, Morton Davis O.D. and Bruce Wick O.D., Ph.D.)  The Program includes eight key components.

·        Adjustment of desk height

·        Use of templates

·        Eye examinations and prescription lenses

·        Development of gross motor skills

·        Reading practice using computer programs

·        Allergy management

·        Writing composition

·        Proper placement and remediation of new students

The NMLC Reading Program is consistent with the findings of the National Reading Panel but the Program includes several activities not included in their findings.

Testimonials

I was principal of Central Elementary School in Santa Clara NM, for two years. When I arrived, the school had a 93% Hispanic population and 100% of the students qualified as economically disadvantaged, was on academic probation with only 28% of its fourth grade students reading proficiently. The school made some adjustments in the delivery of reading instruction and integrated the New Mexico Lions Crane Reading Program.  After one year, the fourth grade students improved to 46% proficient readers.  The second year the score required for proficiency increased and the fourth grade students improved to 84% proficient readers. The third year the third and fifth grade students were also assessed using the NMSBA and the school as a whole in grades three through fifth is at 76% reading proficiency.  Central Elementary ranked 37th out of approximately 447 elementary schools in NM in reading proficiency.

We have two second grade special education students who are now reading at the fifth grade level after completing the Lions Crane Reading Program. I believe in the program. Anything we can do as a school district to get all of our kids on the program, we are going to do.
